Plasmapheresis (Therapeutic Plasma Exchange)

Plasmapheresis, or therapeutic plasma exchange, is an advanced extracorporeal therapy used to remove pathogenic antibodies, immune complexes, and inflammatory mediators from the bloodstream. It plays a critical role in the management of severe immune-mediated renal and systemic diseases.

At IMH, plasmapheresis is delivered through a specialized nephrology-led apheresis service, supported by critical care infrastructure.

Indications include rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis, anti-GBM disease, ANCA-associated vasculitis, antibody-mediated transplant rejection, thrombotic microangiopathies, and select neurological and hematological conditions.

The procedure involves separating plasma from blood cells, discarding the pathogenic plasma, and replacing it with albumin or plasma substitutes. Sessions are tailored based on disease severity, antibody burden, and patient response.

Patients are closely monitored for hemodynamic stability, electrolyte shifts, coagulation changes, and infection risk. When integrated early into treatment pathways, plasmapheresis can be organ-saving and life-saving.

IMH’s plasmapheresis service ensures precision therapy for complex immune-mediated conditions with continuous specialist oversight.
