Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD & APD)

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an effective and patient-centered kidney replacement therapy that allows individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease or end-stage kidney disease to receive dialysis at home. At International Modern Hospital (IMH), peritoneal dialysis is offered as a structured, nephrology-led program with strong Family Medicine support, empowering patients with flexibility, independence, and continuity of care.

PD works by using the peritoneal membrane inside the abdomen as a natural filter. A sterile dialysis solution is infused into the abdominal cavity through a permanent catheter, where it absorbs waste products and excess fluid before being drained. This process can be performed manually or with automated assistance, depending on the chosen modality.

IMH offers both Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) and Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD). CAPD involves manual exchanges performed several times during the day, while APD uses a machine to perform exchanges overnight, allowing patients greater freedom during daytime hours.

Peritoneal dialysis is particularly suitable for patients who prefer home-based care, those with stable cardiovascular status, elderly patients who wish to avoid frequent hospital visits, and individuals seeking greater control over their daily routine. It is also beneficial for preserving residual kidney function and maintaining more stable fluid and electrolyte balance.

Before initiating PD, patients undergo comprehensive evaluation including abdominal assessment, infection risk screening, lifestyle evaluation, and caregiver support assessment. IMH provides structured patient and caregiver training, ensuring safe technique, infection prevention, and confidence in home dialysis management.

Ongoing monitoring includes regular clinic reviews, laboratory assessments, nutritional counseling, and catheter care surveillance. Family Medicine physicians play a vital role in managing comorbid conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, ensuring holistic care beyond dialysis alone.

IMH’s peritoneal dialysis program focuses on patient empowerment, safety, and long-term sustainability, offering a dignified and flexible alternative to in-center hemodialysis.
