Nasal Polypectomy

Nasal polypectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove nasal polyps, which are benign inflammatory growths arising from the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. Polyps commonly develop in patients with chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, or immune-mediated conditions and can significantly impair nasal breathing and sinus function.

Small polyps may be managed medically, but larger or multiple polyps often cause persistent nasal obstruction, loss of smell, facial pressure, snoring, and recurrent sinus infections. When symptoms persist despite optimal medical therapy, surgical removal becomes necessary.

Nasal polypectomy is usually performed endoscopically using specialized instruments inserted through the nostrils. The surgeon carefully removes polyps while preserving healthy tissue and restoring normal sinus drainage. Polypectomy is frequently combined with endoscopic sinus surgery to address underlying sinus disease and reduce recurrence risk.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in most cases. Postoperative care includes saline irrigation, topical medications, and regular follow-up to prevent scarring and recurrence. Temporary congestion and mild bleeding are expected during healing.

While nasal polypectomy significantly improves breathing, smell, and sinus symptoms, polyps can recur. Long-term success depends on continued management of underlying inflammation and allergies under ENT supervision.
