Microlaryngoscopy Procedures
Microlaryngoscopy is a specialized surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia to diagnose and treat disorders of the vocal cords with high precision. It allows detailed magnified visualization of the larynx using an operating microscope, enabling delicate surgical manipulation while preserving critical voice-producing structures. This procedure is particularly important for professional voice users and patients with persistent voice disorders.
Microlaryngoscopy is indicated for vocal cord nodules, polyps, cysts, papillomas, granulomas, early-stage tumors, and unexplained voice changes not responding to conservative treatment. It is also used for biopsy of suspicious laryngeal lesions and removal of foreign bodies lodged in the larynx.
During the procedure, a rigid laryngoscope is inserted through the mouth to expose the vocal cords. The surgeon uses microsurgical instruments under magnification to remove or treat lesions with extreme accuracy. Preservation of normal vocal cord tissue is a primary goal to maintain optimal voice quality after surgery.
Postoperative recovery typically involves voice rest, hydration, and avoidance of vocal strain. Temporary hoarseness is expected and gradually improves as healing progresses. Voice therapy may be recommended to optimize vocal outcomes and prevent recurrence.
Microlaryngoscopy offers excellent results when performed by experienced ENT surgeons, restoring voice quality, relieving symptoms, and allowing early diagnosis of serious laryngeal conditions.
