Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis is the cornerstone life-sustaining treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) and advanced chronic kidney failure. When the kidneys are no longer able to adequately remove waste products, excess fluid, and toxins from the blood, hemodialysis performs this critical function through an external filtration process.

At International Modern Hospital (IMH), hemodialysis services are delivered through a comprehensive nephrology-led program, integrated with internal medicine, vascular access services, nutrition, and critical care support. The focus is on safe, effective, and patient-centered dialysis care aligned with international clinical standards.

Hemodialysis works by circulating the patient’s blood through a dialysis machine equipped with a dialyzer (artificial kidney). The dialyzer removes uremic toxins, balances electrolytes, and eliminates excess fluid before returning purified blood to the body. Treatments are typically performed three times per week, with each session lasting several hours, depending on patient needs.

IMH’s dialysis unit is equipped with modern dialysis machines, ultrapure water systems, and continuous monitoring technology to ensure patient safety and treatment efficiency. Dialysis prescriptions are individualized based on body size, residual kidney function, fluid status, and metabolic needs.

Patients receiving hemodialysis are closely monitored for blood pressure stability, electrolyte balance, anemia, bone-mineral disorders, and cardiovascular health. Nephrologists conduct regular reviews to optimize dialysis adequacy and address complications such as hypotension, cramps, or access-related issues.

A multidisciplinary approach is central to care. Dietitians provide renal nutrition counseling, helping patients manage fluid intake, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus levels. Family Medicine physicians support long-term comorbidity management, including diabetes and hypertension, which are common causes of kidney failure in the UAE.

Hemodialysis at IMH is not limited to maintenance therapy alone; it is part of a broader continuum that includes patient education, access planning, transplant evaluation, and quality-of-life support. The goal is not only survival but sustainable, dignified long-term care for patients living with kidney failure.
