AICD (Automated Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator) Implantation

An Automated Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (AICD) is a life-saving cardiac device designed to detect and treat dangerous ventricular rhythm disturbances that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. These abnormal rhythms may occur in patients with structural heart disease, weakened heart muscle, or inherited electrical disorders.

The AICD continuously monitors heart rhythm and delivers corrective electrical therapy when life-threatening arrhythmias are detected. Unlike pacemakers, AICDs are specifically designed to prevent sudden cardiac death by promptly restoring normal rhythm.

Candidates for AICD implantation undergo comprehensive cardiac evaluation, including imaging, rhythm assessment, and risk stratification. The decision to implant an AICD is based on individual risk factors and established clinical criteria.

The procedure is performed in a controlled cardiac electrophysiology setting. The device is implanted beneath the skin, with leads positioned within the heart to sense rhythm abnormalities and deliver therapy when required.

Post-implantation care includes device programming, monitoring, and long-term follow-up to ensure appropriate function and patient adaptation. AICD therapy provides continuous protection and significantly improves survival in high-risk patients.
