Nasal Deformity / Functional Issues

Nasal deformities and functional nasal issues involve structural or anatomical abnormalities of the nose that affect appearance, breathing, or both. The nose plays a critical dual role as a central facial feature and as the primary airway for respiration. Any deviation in its structure can have both cosmetic and functional consequences, making nasal conditions among the most commonly addressed concerns in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Nasal deformities may be congenital, developmental, post-traumatic, or the result of previous surgery. Common aesthetic deformities include a crooked nose, dorsal hump, wide nasal bridge, bulbous tip, asymmetrical nostrils, or nasal disproportion relative to other facial features. Functional issues often involve nasal septal deviation, internal or external valve collapse, turbinate hypertrophy, or airway obstruction that leads to difficulty breathing, snoring, or chronic nasal congestion.

Patients with nasal functional problems frequently report symptoms such as nasal blockage, mouth breathing, disturbed sleep, reduced exercise tolerance, recurrent sinus infections, and headaches. These symptoms can significantly impact daily activities and overall quality of life. Importantly, functional nasal problems may exist even when external appearance appears normal.

Assessment of nasal deformity and function requires both aesthetic and functional evaluation. This includes external nasal analysis, internal nasal examination, airflow assessment, and detailed medical history. Photographic analysis and imaging may be used to plan corrective strategies and set realistic expectations.

Management often requires surgical correction to restore both form and function. Functional nasal surgery aims to improve airflow and breathing by correcting internal structural abnormalities, while aesthetic nasal surgery focuses on reshaping the nose to achieve facial harmony. In many cases, both objectives are addressed simultaneously to ensure comprehensive correction.

Nasal surgery is highly individualized, as small changes can significantly affect both appearance and breathing. A balanced approach that prioritizes nasal function while enhancing appearance leads to the most durable and satisfactory outcomes. When properly evaluated and treated, correction of nasal deformities and functional issues can dramatically improve breathing comfort, facial confidence, and long-term well-being.
