Leukemia

Leukemia is a group of cancers that originate in the bone marrow and blood, characterized by uncontrolled production of abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal cells crowd out healthy blood cells, impairing the body’s ability to fight infections, carry oxygen, and control bleeding. Leukemia can affect both children and adults and varies widely in its aggressiveness, clinical course, and treatment approach.

Leukemia is broadly classified into acute and chronic forms, as well as myeloid or lymphoid types, depending on the speed of progression and the cell lineage involved. Acute leukemias progress rapidly and require urgent treatment, while chronic leukemias often develop more slowly and may initially be monitored before therapy is initiated. Symptoms may include fatigue, frequent infections, unexplained bruising or bleeding, fever, night sweats, bone pain, and weight loss.

Medical oncology and hematologic oncology play a central role in leukemia management. Systemic therapy is the foundation of treatment and is designed to eliminate malignant cells from the bone marrow and bloodstream. Chemotherapy remains a key treatment modality, particularly for acute leukemias, and is often delivered in multiple phases to induce remission and prevent relapse.

Targeted therapies have significantly improved outcomes for many leukemia subtypes by selectively inhibiting cancer-driving molecular pathways. These treatments are often associated with improved tolerability and long-term disease control. Immunotherapy, including immune-modulating agents, has further expanded treatment options, particularly in relapsed or refractory disease.

Treatment decisions in leukemia are guided by detailed diagnostic evaluation, including blood tests, bone marrow examination, cytogenetics, and molecular profiling. Regular monitoring is essential to assess treatment response and detect early relapse. Supportive care addressing infection prevention, blood transfusions, and side-effect management is critical throughout treatment.

In Dubai and the UAE, leukemia care follows international clinical guidelines and emphasizes personalized treatment planning. Advances in medical oncology have transformed many leukemia subtypes into highly manageable or curable conditions, particularly with early diagnosis and timely access to specialized care.
