Foreign Body in Ear, Nose, or Throat
Foreign bodies in the ear, nose, or throat are common ENT emergencies, particularly in children, but they also occur in adults. Objects may be intentionally or accidentally inserted into body openings and can cause pain, infection, bleeding, or life-threatening airway obstruction depending on location.
Ear foreign bodies include beads, insects, cotton fragments, or hearing aid components. Nasal foreign bodies are most often seen in young children and include food particles, small toys, or paper. Throat and airway foreign bodies are the most dangerous and may include food boluses, bones, dentures, or small objects that compromise breathing.
Symptoms depend on location. Ear foreign bodies cause pain, hearing loss, discharge, or buzzing sensation. Nasal foreign bodies may lead to unilateral nasal discharge, foul odor, bleeding, or nasal obstruction. Throat foreign bodies can cause choking, coughing, drooling, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, or respiratory distress, requiring immediate intervention.
ENT diagnosis is based on history and careful examination. Imaging may be required when the object is not visible or complications are suspected. Removal must be performed using appropriate techniques and instruments to avoid further injury.
Early ENT intervention prevents complications such as infection, tissue damage, airway compromise, or aspiration. Parents and caregivers should avoid attempting removal at home, as improper techniques can worsen the situation.
