Renal & Urological Conditions

Renal and urological disorders significantly alter nutritional requirements due to their impact on fluid balance, electrolyte regulation, metabolism, and waste elimination. Nutrition therapy plays a crucial role in slowing disease progression, preventing complications, and maintaining quality of life across all stages of kidney and urinary tract disease. The Dietetics & Nutrition Department works closely with nephrologists and urologists to deliver individualized nutrition plans aligned with disease severity and clinical goals.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires stage-specific nutrition care to reduce metabolic stress on the kidneys while preventing malnutrition. Nutrition strategies focus on maintaining energy balance, managing metabolic byproducts, and supporting overall nutritional adequacy as kidney function declines.

Patients receiving dialysis nutrition support have increased nutritional demands due to losses during treatment and altered metabolism. Nutrition care emphasizes maintaining strength, preventing muscle wasting, supporting immune function, and managing fluid and electrolyte balance to reduce treatment-related complications.

Kidney stone prevention diets are designed to reduce recurrence risk through dietary modification, hydration strategies, and correction of metabolic contributors. Nutrition education helps patients understand dietary patterns that influence stone formation and long-term kidney health.

Electrolyte imbalance management is essential in renal disease, as impaired kidney function affects sodium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium balance. Nutrition care is closely coordinated with laboratory monitoring to maintain stability and reduce complications.

Fluid-restricted diets are required for patients with reduced urine output or fluid overload risk. Nutrition planning balances hydration needs with safety, symptom control, and patient comfort.

Overall, renal nutrition care aims to preserve remaining kidney function, prevent complications, support treatment tolerance, and enhance long-term outcomes through structured dietary intervention and education.
