Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that commonly affect the legs due to weakened vein walls and faulty valves that impair normal blood flow. In the UAE, varicose veins are increasingly common due to prolonged standing, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, pregnancy, and genetic predisposition. While often considered a cosmetic concern, untreated varicose veins can lead to pain, skin changes, ulcers, and serious circulatory complications.
Patients may experience leg pain, heaviness, swelling, itching, night cramps, visible bulging veins, and skin discoloration around the ankles. Advanced disease can cause venous ulcers and increase the risk of blood clots. Early evaluation is important to prevent progression.
Diagnosis is confirmed through clinical examination and Doppler ultrasound, which assesses vein structure and blood flow. This helps determine the severity of valve dysfunction and guides treatment planning.
Treatment ranges from conservative measures to minimally invasive procedures. Lifestyle changes, compression stockings, and leg elevation may help early cases. For symptomatic or advanced disease, minimally invasive vein treatments such as endovenous laser therapy (EVLT), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), foam sclerotherapy, and ambulatory phlebectomy are highly effective. These techniques seal faulty veins without major surgery, allowing rapid recovery and minimal discomfort.
At IMH, varicose vein treatment is personalized based on vein anatomy and symptom severity. Procedures are performed under local anesthesia, often as day-care treatments. Post-procedure care includes compression therapy and follow-up imaging to ensure successful vein closure and symptom relief.
