Piles (Hemorrhoids)
Piles, medically known as hemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed blood vessels in the rectum or anus. They are a common condition in the UAE, often associated with chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, obesity, pregnancy, low-fiber diets, and straining during bowel movements. Hemorrhoids may be internal (inside the rectum) or external (around the anus), and their severity can range from mild discomfort to significant pain and bleeding.
Common symptoms include rectal bleeding, itching, pain during bowel movements, swelling around the anus, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation. In advanced cases, prolapsed hemorrhoids may protrude outside the anus, causing persistent discomfort and hygiene challenges. Although hemorrhoids are not life-threatening, untreated cases can significantly impact quality of life.
Diagnosis is usually made through clinical examination, including digital rectal examination and anoscopy. In patients with bleeding, additional tests such as sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy may be recommended to rule out other colorectal conditions.
Initial treatment focuses on conservative measures, including dietary modification, increased fiber intake, hydration, stool softeners, and topical medications. For persistent or recurrent hemorrhoids, minimally invasive procedures such as rubber band ligation, infrared coagulation, or sclerotherapy may be recommended.
For severe or advanced cases, surgical intervention provides long-term relief. Procedures such as hemorrhoidectomy or stapled hemorrhoidopexy are performed at IMH using modern techniques aimed at minimizing pain and promoting faster recovery. Post-operative care includes pain control, bowel regulation, and lifestyle guidance to prevent recurrence.
