Hernias (Inguinal, Umbilical, Incisional, Femoral)
A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue protrudes through a weak area in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Common types include inguinal hernias (groin), umbilical hernias (navel), incisional hernias (previous surgical scars), and femoral hernias (upper thigh/groin). Hernias are common in the UAE due to factors such as heavy lifting, obesity, chronic cough, pregnancy, and prior abdominal surgery.
Patients may notice a visible bulge, discomfort, or pain that worsens with standing, lifting, or coughing. While some hernias remain painless initially, they do not heal on their own and tend to enlarge over time. A dangerous complication is strangulation, where trapped tissue loses blood supply, requiring emergency surgery.
The only definitive treatment is surgical repair. IMH specializes in laparoscopic hernia repair, using mesh reinforcement to strengthen the abdominal wall. This minimally invasive approach results in less pain, faster recovery, and lower recurrence rates. Open hernia repair is reserved for large, complex, or recurrent hernias.
Early surgical repair prevents complications, relieves discomfort, and restores normal activity. At IMH, treatment plans are individualized to ensure the safest and most effective surgical approach.
