Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. GERD is increasingly common in the UAE due to obesity, dietary habits, smoking, and sedentary lifestyle.
Common symptoms include heartburn, acid regurgitation, chest discomfort, difficulty swallowing, chronic cough, and hoarseness. If untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, strictures, and Barrett’s esophagus, which increases cancer risk.
Diagnosis involves endoscopy, pH monitoring, and imaging studies to assess severity and rule out complications. While lifestyle changes and medications control symptoms in many patients, surgery is recommended for severe or treatment-resistant GERD.
The most common procedure is laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication, where the upper stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus to prevent acid reflux. This minimally invasive surgery provides long-term symptom relief, reduces medication dependence, and improves quality of life.
At IMH, GERD surgery is performed using advanced laparoscopic techniques, supported by thorough pre-operative evaluation and structured post-operative care.
