Colon Diseases (Colon Cancer, Diverticulitis & Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
Colon diseases affect the large intestine and can significantly impact digestion, bowel function, and overall health. Common conditions include colon cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In the UAE, rising rates of sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and dietary changes have contributed to an increased prevalence of colorectal conditions, making early detection and timely treatment essential.
Patients may experience symptoms such as persistent abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, constipation or diarrhea, rectal bleeding, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, or anemia. While some symptoms may initially appear mild, delayed evaluation can lead to serious complications, particularly in cases of colon cancer or severe inflammation.
Diagnosis involves a combination of colonoscopy, biopsy, CT scan, MRI, and laboratory tests to accurately identify the condition and assess its severity. Colonoscopy plays a crucial role in early detection, especially for colorectal cancer, where early-stage diagnosis significantly improves survival rates.
Treatment depends on the underlying condition. Mild cases of diverticulitis or IBD may be managed medically, but surgical intervention becomes necessary when complications arise, such as perforation, obstruction, abscess formation, or cancer. Surgical procedures include segmental colectomy or total colectomy, where the affected portion of the colon is removed.
At IMH, laparoscopic colorectal surgery is preferred whenever feasible, offering reduced pain, faster recovery, shorter hospital stay, and minimal scarring. In certain cases, a temporary or permanent colostomy may be required, with careful counseling and long-term support provided to patients.
Care is delivered through a multidisciplinary approach, involving gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists, and nutrition specialists. Post-operative care focuses on early mobilization, nutritional rehabilitation, and close follow-up to restore bowel function and quality of life.
