Breast Lumps & Breast Cancer
Breast lumps are a common clinical finding and may result from benign conditions such as cysts or fibroadenomas, or from malignant disease, including breast cancer. Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers among women globally and in the UAE, making early detection and timely surgical management critical for favorable outcomes.
Patients may notice a painless lump in the breast or underarm, changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, nipple discharge, or persistent breast pain. While many lumps are benign, any new or changing breast lump requires prompt medical evaluation to rule out malignancy.
Diagnosis involves a triple assessment approach, including clinical examination, breast imaging (mammography and ultrasound), and biopsy when indicated. MRI may be used in selected cases for further evaluation. Accurate diagnosis allows appropriate surgical planning and coordination with oncology services.
Surgical management depends on the diagnosis and stage of disease. For benign lumps, lumpectomy or excision biopsy is often sufficient. For breast cancer, surgical options include breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) or mastectomy, depending on tumor size, location, and patient preference. Sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary lymph node dissection may be performed to assess cancer spread.
At IMH, breast surgery is delivered through a multidisciplinary model, working closely with medical oncology, radiology, pathology, and radiation oncology teams. Emphasis is placed on oncological safety, cosmetic outcomes, and patient-centered decision-making. Where appropriate, reconstructive planning and breast preservation techniques are considered.
Post-operative care includes wound management, pain control, and coordination of further treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or hormonal therapy. Patients also receive counseling and long-term surveillance planning
