Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer develops from abnormal cells in the cervix and is strongly associated with persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus. It is largely preventable through screening and vaccination, yet advanced cases continue to occur, particularly when screening programs are not accessed regularly.

Early cervical cancer may be asymptomatic, while advanced disease can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, and urinary or bowel symptoms. Medical oncology plays a critical role in treating locally advanced and metastatic cervical cancer through systemic therapy.

Chemotherapy is commonly used in combination with radiation or as a standalone treatment in advanced disease. Systemic therapy helps control tumor growth, reduce symptoms, and improve survival. Immunotherapy and targeted therapies are increasingly used in selected patients based on tumor characteristics.

For recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer, medical oncology focuses on prolonging survival while maintaining quality of life. Treatment decisions are guided by disease extent, prior therapy, and patient health status. Supportive oncology care is essential to manage side effects and symptom burden.

In Dubai and the UAE, cervical cancer treatment follows international oncology standards with access to advanced systemic therapies. Multidisciplinary care ensures coordinated treatment planning and comprehensive patient support.
