Post Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (Post-PTA)
Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty (PTA), commonly performed with stent implantation, is a revascularization procedure used to restore blood flow in obstructed coronary or peripheral arteries. While PTA effectively treats focal stenosis, it does not eliminate the systemic atherosclerotic disease process.
Post-PTA management is therefore critical and focuses on secondary prevention. Patients require dual antiplatelet therapy to prevent stent thrombosis, aggressive lipid lowering, blood pressure control, glycemic optimization, and lifestyle modification.
Long-term follow-up includes monitoring for restenosis, recurrent ischemic symptoms, medication adherence, and participation in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Failure to maintain comprehensive post-PTA care significantly increases the risk of recurrent events.
